Cotoni-Coast Dairies National Monument Update!

August 11, 2017
Last week we had a chance to go for a hike at the newly designated Cotoni - Coast Dairies Unit of the California Coastal National Monument. This hike was put together by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), who manages the property, and County Supervisor Ryan Coonerty. Representatives from key stakeholder organizations were in attendance, including Save the Redwoods League, The Land Trust of Santa Cruz County, Santa Cruz County Parks and Recreation, Local Watershed Council, and several others. This was a chance for the various interests groups to come together and learn about each other and check in with the BLM on the roll out of planning for the property. We were honored to be included with this group of key players from our local conservation and land management community. According to BLM staff, progress has been slow since the designation of the National Monument back in January owing to the change in administration and changing leadership in all levels of the organization. The BLM is currently working on scoping the planning process. One of the key questions is if the Cotoni-Coast Dairies planning process will take place independently or in tandem with the other new properties added to the California Coastal National Monument. Once this is sorted a more localized scoping process will begin which will include public meetings and outreach to get local citizens input on the process. We will continue to stay engaged with the BLM and other key players and keep you posted on opportunities to participate in the planning process as they arise.
