What better way to spend a school holiday than out digging on the trails?! That's exactly what a whole heap of students did at our annual Students Dig Day on Martin Luther King Jr. Day! For the last two years, we have hosted a Students' Dig Day on this school holiday because we realize that students often have busy weekend schedules, making it difficult to attend our normal Dig Days. We wanted to create a special event that celebrated our local students, and we are proud that so many people come out for the fun times. Our Students' Dig Day had a record 98 attendees, 47 of which were students! Wow! Make sure you watch our recap video above to experience all the fun for yourself!
We spent the day in DeLaveaga Park, where we split up into 10 crews and got to work clearing drains and performing basic maintenance on all the trails. We had students from nearly all local schools, from middle school up to college, many of whom were firsttime trail-builders! It was fun to chat with all the kids, share stories about riding in Santa Cruz, and hear what they think of digging in the trails.
We had an extra special post-work celebration for our student diggers, including our best raffle yet! We had a lot of great prizes from Cycle Works, some great product from Specialized, and a brand new Chameleon from Santa Cruz Bicycles! Only our student diggers got a ticket to win the bike, and Shiloh was our lucky winner! We caught up with him after his name was drawn, and he told us that "I just won this super cool bike, and I'm so stoked for it." Congrats Shiloh, and thanks for digging with us!
We hope you’ll join us at an upcoming Dig Day! Click here for the full Dig Day season schedule, and subscribe to our e-newsletter to be the first to hear when sign-ups open. We look forward to digging with you!

We saw lots of big smiles on the trails, but how could you not have fun playing in the dirt?! We were proud to have Cycle Works as the sponsor of the Students' Dig Day. Cycle Works is a great local bike retailer on the Westside, and they make a big effort to build community in Santa Cruz, regularly offering group rides, happy hours, and BBQs at the shop. Cycle Works' owner, Stirling, was out on the trails with us, and he said "we're proud supporters of Slug Cycling at UCSC, so it seems fitting that we sponsor the Students' Dig Day." Swing by Cycle Works and say hi to Stirling!
"I like riding bikes with my friends, and working on trails is a whole lot more fun than I thought it would be!"
