How to Celebrate Earth Day's 50th Anniversary from Home
April 17, 2020
Did you know 2020 marks the 50th anniversary of the first Earth Day back in 1970? Earth Day began as a day to raise awareness about pollution. Since then, Earth Day has evolved and is now meant to bring awareness to issues such as climate change, sustainability, and conservation. Reducing negative impacts on our Mother Earth is something we strive for at MBOSC through thoughtful, low-impact trail design and construction. From our team to yours, happy Earth Day!
Like you, we had planned this day differently. Coronavirus has put almost everything on hold, and while it’s made daily life a new type of challenge, one latent consequence scientists are seeing is the slowing of greenhouse gas emissions. While this decline is temporary and will likely pick back up once things shift back to normal, it’s a small silver lining worth celebrating today. Our team pulled together a few fun activities to bring the festive spirit into your home! Check ‘em out below.

- Join the Exploratorium online as they dive into the science behind climate change, compost, energy, and more!
- Take the Earth Challenge through earthday.org. On their site, you can take a number of pledges to make the globe greener and learn about the history of Earth Day. Plus, you can access digital Earth Day events you can join in on!
- Do you live on a busy street or in an apartment? Celebrate Earth Day by making a window display! Use art supplies and recycled materials to show you support the earth. Then share a picture of your window with the EPA using hashtags #EarthDay2020, #EarthDayAtHome, and #EPAat50.
- Is staying in the lines hard for your little ones? The EPA also has some fun printable coloring sheet for them!
- NASA is also offering a handful of activities for children and adults. Their activities from identifying coral reefs from photos from space to live Q&A’s with scientists living in Antarctica.
