The trail stewardship’s latest project will be the largest pumptrack in Santa Cruz County and will bring new recreation opportunities to underserved communities. SANTA CRUZ, CALIF. – Mountain Bikers of Santa Cruz (MBOSC), a 501(c)(3) trail stewardship organization, recently broke ground on the largest pumptrack in Santa Cruz County, the Ramsay Park Pumptrack in Watsonville, California. Through the development of this pumptrack, the MBOSC team will provide new cycling, skating, rollerblading and scootering opportunities to users of all ages and abilities. This project is fully funded by MBOSC, thanks to a generous donation from a private donor. Interested parties can learn more about the project on the MBOSC website here. Southern Santa Cruz County is lacking recreational infrastructure, especially for bicycles, so this project is a huge opportunity to bring a much-needed facility to this underserved community. The new pump track, located at the site of the old skatepark, was included in the City's 2020 park master plan for Ramsay Park, based on community feedback. Ramsay Park is located in the heart of Watsonville and serves as a community focal point. With ball fields, a playground, skatepark, picnic area, community center, and now a pumptrack, there will be a constant buzz of activity. As COVID-19 continues to impact gyms and schools, the Ramsay Park pumptrack will also offer peace of mind to families who are in need of a place to safely exercise together. “The time has never been better for a new pumptrack,” said Matt De Young, executive director of Mountain Bikers of Santa Cruz. “With both kids and parents staying home more often due to COVID-19, the Ramsay Park Pumptrack will provide the Watsonville community with a much-needed area to get exercise and practice essential cycling skills safely.” The project is the first paved pumptrack built by the MBOSC team, and will feature nearly 20,000 sq ft of pristine rollers, berms, and jumps. In addition to being fun, the track will also be both beautiful and virtually maintenance-free, with underground storm drainage and surrounding landscaping by our team featuring native and drought-tolerant plants. “It’s always a pleasure to build new park features that will bring fresh opportunities and access to the Watsonville community,” said Nick Calubaquib, Parks and Community Services Director for the City of Watsonville. “We’re proud to support Mountain Bikers of Santa Cruz as they bring this beautiful and accessible new pumptrack to life - our community is going to love it.” Mountain Bikers of Santa Cruz and the City of Watsonville are hosting a virtual town hall to discuss the project and answer any questions from the public on Wednesday, October 28 from 6:00 - 7:00 p.m. Interested parties may RSVP for the event here. The MBOSC team has also organized hands-on volunteer opportunities throughout the pumptrack building plan (signup forms here). Group size will be limited to comply with COVID-19 requirements, and all volunteers will go through additional training surrounding special safety procedures to preserve public health.
