Parks Master Plan Update & Action Alert!

September 20, 2017
We are getting closer and closer to having recommendations for increased mountain bike access and mountain bike specific directional trails included in the City of Santa Cruz’s Parks Master Plan—but the public process continues, and we need your help. Back in June, the Parks and Recreation Commission voted 4-3 to include the recommendations on mountain biking. Whew—that was a narrow victory, but winning by a sprint to the line is still a win. The next steps in the process include two upcoming meetings. The first is with the Parks and Recreation Commission for their final review of the Parks Master Plan, and then it goes to City Council for their final review. From there the Plan goes through the CEQA environmental review process before coming back to Council for final approval. What does all this mean? There are two upcoming public meetings, and we need you there to show the mountain bike community’s ongoing support and engagement. Please put these meetings on your calendar: Parks & Recreation Commission Meeting September 25, 4:00pm City Council Chambers 809 Center Street, Santa Cruz 95060 We’ll be there presenting the results of our petition to the City of Santa Cruz asking for more mountain bike access. The petition had 1,685 signatures! City Council Meeting October 10 City Council Chambers 809 Center Street, Santa Cruz 95060 **This is the big one! Please make every effort to attend this meeting and speak in support of mountain biking in Santa Cruz.** We get it if you’re thinking, “Didn’t I just attend a meeting recently? Do I really need to go and speak-up again?” The answer is yes! It’s kind of like clearing a tough section of trail. You might have to session it over and over, making a little more progress each time, and then finally you clean it. Progress takes some work and time—and maybe even a few bruises along the way—but it’s worth all the effort when you clean that section. Or in this case, it will definitely be worth the effort when we get more world-class trails in Santa Cruz. Want to help but can’t attend the meetings? Here’s what you can do: Thanks for supporting MBOSC!
