Recap: Old Growth Classic Fundraiser

July 31, 2020
Thank you to all who donated to the 2020 Old Growth Classic Fundraiser! Together, we raised $12,115 in just TWO WEEKS! These funds will be split with CA State Parks, and fund repairs to Gazos Creek Road, trail access in Big Basin, and trail development and maintenance across Santa Cruz County. While we couldn't host the 2020 Old Growth Classic, we are grateful to have killer sponsors and above-and-beyond supporters who, through their donations to this campaign, kept the spirit of our favorite annual event alive. So, who won the prize packs? Let's meet our winners!

Basket 1 Winner: Sam Shaffer

Sam is a longtime MBOSC volunteer, racer and Trail Crew Leader. He's an engaged, thoughtful, and dependable supporter of our organization, and we are proud to share that he won basket 1, full of Paul Components Klamper brakes, Ibis Cycles carbon bars, and more. Sam plans to build up a new bike with these components, and if you see him around town with flashy orange and purple brakes, congratulate him on his win! "I got into gravel riding in 2015 when I moved to Santa Cruz as a way to explore our amazing local State Parks. Since then, I've spent a ton of time riding gravel bikes all over Santa Cruz County. Gazos Creek Road is one of my all-time favorites, and with the Old Growth Classic not happening this year it was the perfect opportunity to support this fundraiser and get this beautiful road back in tip-top shape for riding!"

Basket 2 Winner: Chris Walters

Chris is a powerhouse volunteer with MBOSC and makes the list of our top volunteers year after year. We're thankful for his support, and our team was stoked to see him win the "For the Locals" prize basket, complete with a FOX AX fork, a chiropractic session with Santa Cruz CORE Fitness + Rehab, a Voler summer kit, and a Spokesman Bicycles gift card. "I chose to support this fundraiser because I was part of the initial group that brought the first race to life and really enjoyed the group and the stoke of the fun weekend and I want that to continue in the future. That includes a great relationship with State Parks. With this fundraiser, additional money will go to State Parks for the trails in Big Basin, which is a win."

Basket 3 Winner: Geoff McGinnis

Geoff raced Old Growth Classic in 2019, and jumped onthe opportunity to support his favorite event of the year! He chose basket 3 because, let's be honest, he was looking for an excuse to build up a new gravel bike. ;) We're so glad he won the component-heavy prize back with goodies from Easton Cycling, Praxis, and Voler, and can't wait to see his new rig at Old Growth Classic 2021! "We're spoiled with amazing terrain and scenery here in the Bay Area. All the effort of groups like MBOSC to keep our trails in fantastic shape and advocate for new infrastructure in the region ensures we get to continue enjoying it all long into the future." Basket 4 Winner: Kevin Waggoner [caption id="attachment_12948" align="alignnone" width="319"] Photo credit: John Prolly[/caption] Our final winner is Kevin Waggoner of Scotts Valley! Kevin's prize pack includes carbon wheels from Praxis, Ibis handlebars, a Spokesman gift card, and more. The wheels go straight onto his Stigmata V2, and he's planning on breaking them in with some big rides up ahead. He's raced the Old Growth Classic in the past, and calls it "the perfect challenge". We hope to see Kevin out at next year's event! "My Dad was the State Park Ranger at Nisene Marks for more than 20 years through the 80's and 90's. He worked on new trail development in the park as a passion project for many of those years, but it takes an organization like MBOSC to make all the planning and labor come together." Cheers to each of our winners, and thanks again to our sponsors, Praxis Works, FOX, Trail Head Cyclery, Mike’s Bikes, Voler, Spokesman Bicycles, Bicycle Trip, Paul Components, Light & Motion, Santa Cruz County Bank, Ibis Cycles, Wilderness Trail Bikes, and Santa Cruz CORE Fitness + Rehab.
