Recap: U-Con & EMT Dig Day 11/9/24

November 12, 2024

What a Dig Day! It was so good to be back out on Emma McCrary Trail and University Connector Trail for another Dig Day. We had beautiful weather for the event and although soil conditions were dry, we managed to get a ton of work done. We had a crew up at the top of U-Con moving pavers for an upcoming armoring project, we had a crew fixing the fence down towards the bottom of Emma McCrary Trail and then we had several crews in between them brushing, clearing and reshaping drains, and flossing bridges. All of this work came at the perfect time because just two days later, we had ~1” of rainfall.

Before we get into the photos, we have some thanks in order. Thank you to the 60+ volunteers who came out. Huge thank you to our friends over at Bicycle Trip and Adidas Terrex FiveTen for sponsoring the event and making it all possible. And final thanks goes out to Kelly’s French Bakery for providing pastries for everyone pre-event and to Shanty Shack Brewing for hosting the after-party and hooking up all volunteers with a free beverage!

No better way to start your morning than with a Kelly’s French Bakery pastry!
Big decisions for pack-a-lunch!
Jess from Adidas Terrex FiveTen, brought a fleet of demo shoes for volunteers to try. *And two lucky volunteers got to take home a pair!
Aaron, of Bicycle Trip, is a long-time supporter of SCMTS. Support local business!
1-2-3 TRAILS!
What a crew!
Lots of drain work went down and the timing was perfect because we got a solid rain just 2 days later.
Our Trail Crew Leaders are always there to help at Dig Days. Mr. Jon Sanders explaining water shed here.
What’s your preferred method for transporting 65lb turfstone pavers?
Flossing bridges. Not the most glorious of tasks but it’s vital to keeping bridges in good shape.
Brushing. Another not-so-glorious trail task but someone’s gotta do it to keep sightlines clear and to keep poison oak at bay.
Demo shoes are looking good!
Thank you, Shanty Shack, for hosting the after-party and for hooking volunteers up with a cold beer!
Jess brought the goods for the after-party raffle.
Aaron brought the goods, too! We had a stacked raffle.
Shout out to our newest Programs Team employee, Claudia, for her first Dig Day!
And shout out onion rings.
…and whatever this, kinda creepy, relic is…

Thanks again to everyone who came out! We’re looking forward to our next Dig Day out at Soquel Demonstration State Forest on Saturday, December 14. Those sign-ups are dropping soon—take a look at our Dig Day calendar in the meantime!
