Timeline of Our Work in Wilder Ranch State Park
1997
SCMTS (then known as Mountain Bikers of Santa Cruz, or MBOSC) is founded to raise money for the purchase of Grey Whale Ranch (2,400 acre lot on the north side) as an addition to Wilder Ranch State Park. The new property connects Wilder Ranch to Empire Grade, creating an essential connection between UCSC and State Parks properties.
2001
MBOSC hosts trail work in Wilder Ranch on the first Sunday of every month, expanding the group’s impact on the local park.
2015
MBOSC and California State Parks partner to build and open the Enchanted Loop Trail Reroute in the Wilder backcountry. The reroute makes the trail more fun for users and reduces erosion issues to improve long-term environmental health.
2016-2019
MBOSC hosts the annual Old Cabin Classic, a mountain bike race in Wilder Ranch State Park to raise funds for trail maintenance in the park. Old Cabin sees hundreds of racers come together to uplift trails each and every May.
2019
SCMTS staff and volunteers complete construction of the West Engelsmans Reroute in Wilder’s backcountry. The new trail replaces a badly-eroded fire road with winding, gentle singletrack.
2020
SCMTS staff and volunteers complete over 400 hours of service on Wilder trails. Tasks range from important maintenance tasks like brushing and tread repair to public outreach during the COVID-19 pandemic. During this tough year of uncertainty, SCMTS made sure the community could rely on Wilder Ranch trails for much-needed healing, escape, and adventure they offer.
2021-2024
SCMTS staff and volunteers complete over 2,000 hours of trail work in Wilder Ranch State Park. Tasks vary from urgent post-storm tree removal to preventative maintenance like brushing, rock armoring, and drain clearing, but all serve one purpose–to help more folks get out onto trails and have fun outside safely.
We have additional trail improvements in the works to ensure a bright future for Wilder. Donate to our “Go Wilder” campaign today to help bring them to life!
